Construction of silos and tanks according to NTC 2018 and European regulations

Priority to structural safety and regulatory compliance Overview of the NTC 2018 standards and reference Eurocodes

The NTC 2018 (Italian Technical Standards for Construction) represent the main regulatory reference in Italy for the design, verification and testing of structures, including those intended for the storage of liquids or bulk materials, such as silos and tanks. By integrating the principles of the Eurocodes, the NTC ensure a scientific and rigorous approach to structural safety, seismic resistance and long-term durability of constructions.

Designing and building according to NTC 2018 means ensuring that every structure is able to reliably withstand the expected static and dynamic actions, including internal pressures, wind and snow loads, seismic actions and instability phenomena. The standards also require a careful assessment of the mechanical properties of the materials, the construction techniques adopted and the interaction with the ground.

Structural checks are mainly based on the structural Eurocodes, including:

  • EN 1991 for the definition of loads and environmental actions
  • EN 1993 for steel design, including instability and fatigue phenomena
  • EN 1998 for the seismic design of industrial structures

The joint application of the NTC and Eurocodes ensures that the structure complies with the highest European standards of safety, reliability and sustainability.
The design process includes detailed structural analyses, FEM modelling, documentary checks and, where required, validation by the authorities responsible for seismic and structural control.

Silos and tanks built in compliance with NTC 2018 therefore represent not only a safe and long-lasting investment, but also a clear indicator of design quality and compliance with current regulations in the national and European context.

What does regulatory compliance mean in the construction of industrial tanks

Structural design (NTC 2018 + Eurocodes)
Compliance with NTC 2018 and Eurocodes ensures that tanks are sized to withstand static, dynamic and seismic loads, according to the highest standards of structural safety established by European and Italian regulations.

Leak prevention system
All the referenced standards include specific measures to prevent accidental leaks, through the use of multiple walls, safety devices, automatic controls and inspection plans.

Monitoring and testing system
It is mandatory to carry out functional and structural checks, including leak tests, pressure tests and final inspections, to ensure the suitability of the tank before commissioning.

Periodic inspections and maintenance
The regulations require that tanks undergo regular inspections by qualified technicians or notified bodies, with a frequency that varies according to the type of service and the risk category.

Technical documentation and traceability
Each tank must be accompanied by complete documentation certifying the materials used, the welding processes, the inspections carried out and the maintenance plan, ensuring traceability and regulatory compliance.

Proven expertise – NTC 2018 + Eurocodes

In the construction of support structures and tanks subject to seismic and environmental actions, Steeltech strictly applies NTC 2018 and the related Eurocodes, ensuring compliance with Italian regulations on structural safety.
Thanks to integrated design and the use of advanced FEM software, the company guarantees that every structure is calculated, verified and tested to withstand severe operating conditions, in full compliance with technical regulations.
Steeltech is recognized for its design reliability and its ability to interact with public and private bodies for works subject to seismic reporting and static checks.
